The first thing that immediately stands out is the name of the album, Goldenrod. Goldenrod is a vibrant yellow color that is often associated with warmth, energy, and optimism. In the natural world, goldenrod is also the name of a flowering plant that is known for its bright yellow blossoms. It’s easy to draw parallels between the plant and the album.
Goldenrod plant is often misidentified as ragweed. A little education in learning the difference can go a long way. The same holds true for the latest album by Teni Rane. It could get grouped in with other artists, but one listen will demonstrate that this album is very unique.
Having listened through the entire album many times now, I am completely smitten with Teni’s voice. I particularly love the emotion and depth which adds a layer of richness to the music. Her vocal nuances and control create an ethereal listening experience. Every note she hits feels like a gentle caress to the ears, leaving a lasting impression. It’s in the perfect octave range for me, in other words, my sweet spot. It’s comforting and soothing. Teni reminds me a lot of Hope Sandoval, who was the vocalist of Mazzy Star.
The first song on the album, Firefly, really sets the tone for the entire collection. A very short cello opening gives way to glorious vocals. Teni really hits the high notes as she sings about the firefly:
"Firefly, help me to spread my wings
It’s the only way to reach for dreams
I could do without these doubts
And breaking free would make me proud
Firefly shining at last
You‘ve never cared about the past
This summer night will soon be gone
With the coming of dawn"
This is a song about hope and belief that the past does not necessarily determine what the present and future will bring. No use caring about the past because the past really doesn’t exist any longer.
I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to the title track, Goldenrod. Another song that starts of with strings. The opening bars of the cello, accompanied by acoustic guitar, flow perfectly into the vocals. It’s a little bit country, and a little bit Goth. I think it’s the cello. It has a perfect melancholy undertone that contrasts with Teni’s voice which screams optimism.
The diverse instrumentation, the seamless transitions, and Teni’s vocals really make the music come alive. It’s clear that the band members have a strong musical rapport, and their collaboration adds depth and variety to the tracks.
The songwriting is another standout aspect of the album. The lyrics are deeply reflective and explore themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the passage of time. Each track feels like a introspective journey, inviting listeners to contemplate their own experiences and emotions.
Overall, “Goldenrod” is a mesmerizing album that showcases Teni Rane’s exceptional talent as a vocalist and songwriter. The fusion of poignant lyrics, soulful vocals, and captivating instrumentals creates a deeply immersive listening experience.
